The process of ageing affects people in many ways. The community at The Autumn Centre works to affirm strengths, build confidence and help maintain independence in old age.
Dementia is increasing throughout our society and many many families have first hand experience of a family member living with this condition in the later years of their life. Dementia means the brain loses some of its capacity and is progressive. Ultimately it can destroy congitive function, dramatically effecting memory loss and personality changes. In later stages, many people living with dementia will need full time care.
Alongside medical research, there is powerful academic and practical research to show that the progression of dementia can be slowed down for years by exercising and using the brain in order through focussed 'Brain Gym' techniques.
Thanks to Northants Public Health initiative with the University of Northampton, The Autumn Centre is planning to run a Brain Gym programme for those who have a recent diagnosis of dementia. This Brain Gym Academy will run in association with and under the professional supervision of Lifelong Learrning and we hope to launch during 2027
Research has shown that results are very significant
For the person living with dementia: enjoy stimulation of structured input and brain training to sustain mental facility and independence following diagnosis of dementia.
For carers and families: prolong by years the independence of their loved ones with substantial corresponding emotional and massive financial benefits of delaying or avoiding the need for full time residential care.
